In July 2025 the promotion office hatched a “special zone” in the port city Kaohsiung for financial institutions to take advantage of increased asset management liberalisation.
To that end, Taiwan’s stock exchange is casting AAMC as “another world asset management hub”, notes Hu Jin-li, a professor in the Institute of Business and Management at National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University in Taipei.
Taiwan also happens to need another “leading industry” to diversify its reliance on semiconductor manufacturing, the professor says, noting that market regulators have played with the idea for decades.
— Finding compatibility —
Professor Hu says he expects results from the stock exchange’s efforts: “During the geopolitical conflicts in various regions in the world, Taiwan still maintains its open economy and advanced manufacturing during the past decades, providing the solid oundations for another financial hub in the Asia Pacific,” he says.
“Taiwan needs not only to provide secured services but also flexible financial flows, along with trustworthy legal supervision, and cybersecurity,” Professor Hu says. To get there, he says, Taiwan must improve its compatibility with financial systems of other countries and regions. “Bilateral and multilateral negotiations will be needed,” he says.
