Special issue information:

Transport sustainability is one of the key elements for policymakers and operators. Sustainable transport usually refers to providing transport services with low or zero emission, energy efficient or affordable services (Shah et al., 2021). Even though transport service is one of the essential services, it is inevitably causing significant negative effects. According to OECD, on average, transport sectors generated 23% of greenhouse gases (GHGs) of OECD countries in 2020 (OECD, 2023). Recently, there have been several strategies proposed by various sectors in attempts to achieve a sustainable goal, such as social and corporate governance (ESG) strategies, setting net-zero goals, introducing carbon tax policy, etc. What are the best sustainable strategies and how to ensure sustainable operations become a challenging issue. Furthermore, transport is a wide system. It contains various sectors, such as public transport, aviation, maritime, and logistics. With such context, sustainable transport might include wide range activities and concepts. This themed volume seeks to provide the opportunity for the academic community to develop greater knowledge on how transport systems should be managed such that they can achieve sustainable development goals (SDGs).

This themed volume will consist of both theoretical and empirical contributions that holistically address the concept of business and management within the field of sustainable transport. We aim to seek contributions that will advance the understanding of the following issues:

Evaluation of different transport files along with their operating characteristics and the impact on sustainable transport and efficiency measurement;
Assessment the sustainability of ‘new’ transport fields of transport such as ‘demand responsive transit’;
Assessment of the effects of the external variables (e.g., environmental impact) on transport sustainability;
Novel methods that identify and evaluate transport sustainability;
Empirical data from different transport fields such as public transport, logistics management, and port performance;
Approaches to specific transport policies related to sustainable transport;
Analysis and implications of new technologies specifically targeted to improve transport sustainability, for example, autonomous vehicles, built-in car technologies, new technologies (e.g., real-time information and open data), and big data analysis.
Measure the impacts of various strategies (e.g., environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG) strategies, setting net-zero goals, introducing carbon tax policy) to transport sustainability.
